At the beginning of this world we were created as stewards to manage it and be accountable to God. The stewardship of the garden was our job, so to speak, in the order of creation established by the Creator. For the human race, being a steward is innate and just as much a part of our DNA as our eye color and height. We will always be stewards.
Understanding the identity of a steward is key in our relationship and responsibility to God. Ever since sin came, God has been calling us back to our rightful position and responsibility. He wants to reinstate us as His stewards. This is no small task, but it is God's way of teaching us who we are, by what we do. We are "entrusted with the gospel" (I Thessalonians 2:4), to care for and manage it. Every Christian's vocation is to manage the gospel. In an imperfect world, our living and preaching the gospel is at the core of a steward's heart and life.
