I went to college with a kid who drove me crazy. He was always right. And it made me mad - because that is what I wanted to be. Always right. Is there anything more irritating than a smarty-pants? People who are always right can be a pain. Mark Twain called them: People who are good in the worst sense of the word. Always right.
Is that what has happened to our church? Have we become what we abhor? Always right? Spiritual, ecclesiastical, theological smarty-pants? On the Judgment Day, the compelling question that Jesus will ask every human being will be, What did you do for those less fortunate than you?
When we stand before the divine bar of justice, Jesus will not ask us, What did you believe? Instead, He will ask, What did you do for those less fortunate than you? The defining question will not be, Did you know the truth? Rather, it will be, Did you show the truth? Because in the end, the very end, right behavior supercedes right belief. We have Jesus' last word on it.
