Beliefs and Behavior

Devotional for Tuesday, October 03, 2017
This devotional is brought to you by Pacific Press® Publishing Association.

Once upon a time there was a chosen people whom God called, My people. They repeated the prophecies. They recited the laws. They remembered the holy day. But they could not understand why God was not blessing them as He should, as He had promised. So they went to God and asked why He was not blessing them, in spite of their being passionate about Him.

And behold (as the story goes), the Lord laughed . . . and cried at the same time. You worship me with your lips, He cried in reply, but you wander far from me with your lives. Passionate beliefs unaccompanied by passionate behavior are awfully hollow. If you want to prove you are passionate about Me, God said, Then get off your fasts and embrace My passion: share your food with the hungry, clothe the naked, and satisfy the needs of the oppressed.
