Depression and anxiety are, in that order, the top mental disorders worldwide. They represent severe sadness, hopelessness, restlessness, and fear. The Bible is full of hopeful expressions, such as joy, rejoicing, be still, do not fear, be of courage, and so on. Invariably, these messages of reassurance are in the context of God's invitation to accept Him, to love Him, and to obey Him. Research is finding, again and again, that church attendance contributes significantly to the relief of depression and anxiety.
Current studies using multiple variables all point in the same direction: church attendance seems to play a protective role against mental illnesses. The connection between going to church and enjoying a healthy mind is becoming clearer. Should we surprized then, when the psalmist writes, "I rejoiced with those who said to me, 'Let us go to the house of the Lord.' " -- Psalm 122:1.
