About forty days after Jesus' birth, Joseph and Mary took their first-born Son to the temple to present Him to the Lord. . .At that moment, Simeon entered the temple. He was old, but he had been told by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. He took the baby from Mary's arms and with a joy beyond any he had ever felt before, he said, " 'Now, Lord, you can let your servant die in peace. With my own eyes I have seen your salvation, which you prepared before all people' " (Luke 2:29).
Turning to Mary and Joseph, who stood amazed at what he was saying, Simeon blessed them. He said to Mary, " 'God has chosen this child to cause the fall and rise of many in Israel. He will be a sign from God that many people will not accept so that the thoughts of many will be made known. And the things that will happen will make your heart sad, too' " (Luke 2:34, 35).
