Dan Smith, the son of missionaries to Thailand and part of the Venden family of preachers, has been senior pastor at La Sierra University Church, a 2600 member congregation, since 1994.
Dan went to high school at Far Eastern Academy in Singapore, but graduated from Andrews Academy in 1971. He graduated from Pacific Union College in 1974 and from the seminary at Andrews University in 1979.
Dan has pastored at all levels. He started as a youth pastor in Portland, Oregon and then was a district pastor in southern Oregon for six years. He pastored the Newbury Park Academy church in southern California and the Hinsdale Church near Chicago before coming to the La Sierra University Church in California.
He is married to Hilda, a medical indexer, and they have two sons, Alex, 12, and Eric, 10. He enjoys all the sports Ė golf, basketball, white-water rafting, skiingóbut has little time to participate in them. Dan loves taking large groups from his church on mission trips: They have done evangelism in the Philippines and Thailand, weeks of prayer in India and Thailand, built schools, churches and orphanages all over, and have several more trips planned for the next year.
Danís passion is the character of God and giving people new reason to hope in the church. People know him for using stories to illustrate the gospel, and for loving everything that is a part of a church community. He loves meeting new people all over the world where he speaks.
